Reminder: GOFC will hold a Spoil Banks "Learnament" in Crystal River on Saturday, May 6, 2023 in preparation for the upcoming Spring Tournament which will also be held in Crystal River

What is it?

This May the annual GOFC Spring Tournament will return to Crystal River. In order to help make sure that everyone is well acquainted with the area, GOFC will hold a "Learnament" on Saturday, May 6th. The Learnament will be led by GOFC member John Patrick (a former commercial fisherman in the area) . Participating boats will depart from the boat ramp at Fort Island Trail Park at 9am. This is the boat ramp that's about halfway down Fort Island Trail, not the one that's at the very end. John will talk about safely navigating the waters around Crystal River and local tactics for targeting the big ten species.

Most of the day will focus on the chain of islands and shoals created when deep water channels were dredged out for the Crystal River power plant. These "Spoil Banks", as they're known locally, are a hot spot for nearly all of the club's big ten target species including redfish, sea trout, king mackerel, Spanish mackerel, sheepshead, cobia, bluefish, and flounder.

No limit is being set for the number of boats that can participate and you don't need to have a boat in order to sign up! John will be working to make sure that everyone makes it out on the water.

After the learnament, everyone is invited to meet up for dinner and drinks around 4pm at Cajun Jimmy's Seafood Seller & Cafe on US 19 in Crystal River (in the same plaza as West Marine). If you like authentic Louisiana style Cajun food, this is the place!
