held on Saturday, March 9th in Cedar Key

What is it?

Each spring, sheepshead congregate on offshore reefs and other structures to spawn. The Sheepshead Shootout is one of the club's most popular and lively tournaments. In addition to the individual prizes, there will be prizes for the boats with the best catch, so having a large crew on board will be an advantage. Since the sheepshead tend to congregate in the same spots year after year, it's not uncommon to have several member boats fishing in close quarters. This often leads to lots of "friendly" advice and encouragements being shouted over the water. It's a great time and one not to miss.

The tournament is free and open to all club members in good standing. All individuals participating in the tournament do so at their own risk and must have a current waiver of liability on file with GOFC. All participants must register for the tournament using the link above no later than 7:30 pm the night before the tournament.

Prizes will be awarded on both an individual and a per-boat basis, but each fish may only be entered once. That means if a fish is entered in the heaviest fish (individual) contest, it may not be entered in the heaviest haul (per-boat) contest. Each angler may only enter one the fish that they caught in the heaviest fish contest. Each boat may enter 3 fish caught by any club member on board that vessel in the heaviest haul contest and the prizes will be awarded based on the combined weight of those three fish. To make things a bit more interesting, the tournament committee has intentionally structured the format of this tournament to encourage participants to make strategic choices about how they enter their fish. The results of each weighing will be kept in strict secrecy until the weigh-in is over. The prizes awarded will be as follows:
Heaviest Sheepshead (Individual Prize)
1st Place: $100
2nd Place: $75
3rd Place: $50
Heaviest Haul
(Per-Boat Prize)
1st Place: $100
2nd Place: $75
3rd Place: $50
Interpretation of the tournament rules shall be at the sole discretion of the Tournament Director.
